A man was found dead Wednesday in the wreckage of a car that plowed into a taco stand in a residential neighborhood in Pomona. The collision happened Wednesday morning on the 9900 block of West 11th Street, the Pomona Police Department said. The man was identified as 29-year-old Jesus Mendoza Lopez of La Puente. The car struck a Taco Bell restaurant on the northwest corner of 10th and West 11th streets at about 8:50 a.m. A passerby heard screeching tires, looked out the window and saw the driver coming from behind the restaurant, said Lt. Larry DeBella. He said the car “skidded out and hit the taco stand.”
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Authorities say a man who drove a pick-up truck into a Southern California taco stand has been arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter. Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Joe Ferri said 28-year-old Jesus Mendoza Lopez was arrested on the scene and charged with single count of vehicular manslaughter causing great bodily injury, or death. He said Lopez’s passenger, 22-year-old Joshua Dominguez, was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter. “It was just unbelievable to see someone get knocked right out of his car and go flying out like a dead skunk,” Ferri said. Pomona police said Lopez was heading east on West 11th Street just before 8 a.m. when he struck the corner of the restaurant and a parked car. The driver was thrown into a parked car that was facing east on the south side of the intersection. He was found lying next to it. Mendoza Lopez was in critical condition when he was booked into a hospital. Dominguez was also held on $1 million bail, but prosecutors say he’s not a flight risk. Ferri said both were from Pomona. They’re considered to be suspects in the case. Pomona police Sgt. Rob Taylor said no one was injured in the collision. Mendoza Lopez was being booked with the Pomona sheriff’s department for felony reckless driving
