LANCASTER — An Essex County man found dead at his home in the early morning hours Thursday is believed to have shot himself in the chest after becoming agitated over recent financial woes, police said.
Police responded to the house on Eubank Way at about 5:45 a.m. They found Aaron Carter lying in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Eubank Way was quiet Thursday morning as police officers, who had spent the day investigating Carter’s death, left the scene carrying their evidence bags.
The police chief at first declined to release the name of the victim, but acknowledged the man was a 56-year-old black man who worked for the city council. The police chief said the death comes as a “tragic shock.”
Lancaster Police Chief Chris Williams said a preliminary investigation showed Mr. Carter had come to his house at 4:30 that morning and appeared to be acting irrationally.
“The chief was called at 4:55 a.m. and he did not take a statement or go in the house,” Williams said. “There was some concern for his safety, but at that time there was no evidence to believe that he was at imminent risk of harm.”
Williams said police had the house under surveillance on Thursday morning, but the man was not seen near the house during the day.
Police continued to investigate the death, but declined to comment on what the investigation was based on at this time.
The death is the second such incident in the city in the last two weeks.
Earlier in the day, an unidentified man in his 20s was found dead at a location off of Eubank Drive,
