Julia Roberts and George Clooney’s billion dollar partnership: A look at what makes the pair box office gold
By Jill Burstein
Julia Roberts is certainly not a novice when it comes to making movies, but when it comes to the business side of things, she was a no-show at the recent Sundance Film Festival premiere of Crazy Rich Asians.
On Thursday, the 36-year-old actress and her husband, Hollywood mogul George Clooney, announced they are developing a co-production venture that combines their two businesses into one larger one, with the aim of creating “an original creative enterprise that has global proportions.”
Roberts was in the audience for the premiere, where she was asked questions about her upcoming projects while Clooney was in the audience.
It’s been almost seven years since the couple announced their plans to produce their own independent films, and almost five years since they signed their first deal as a co-producer on the wildly successful comedy-drama They’re No Longer Married.
But the Hollywood couple did not just bring their film and television businesses together by creating an original, creative enterprise. They were part of a historic deal, that also came about because of the success of Crazy Rich Asians.
Roberts told those gathered in the room, that she’s been working on various projects with Clooney and his production company, Plan B following the success of the film and how they could work together on co-productions.
“I’ve always been in love with George,” she said. “We have a shared love of movies, of all of the characters who are on screen, who become real, just in the magic of making a good movie.”
Clooney echoed her sentiments, but he noted that they wanted to work together on independent projects, particularly in Asia and South America. “I love Julia,” he said. “We have a shared love of movies, of all of the characters who are on screen, who become real, just in the magic of making a good movie.”
