How Frances Tiafoe went from sleeping at a tennis center to the US Open semifinals
Frances Tiafoe is on a roll. A major. A finals run. A new, big sponsorship deal. Frances has been nothing short of amazing all week, after being seeded 18th in the draw on Thursday. After a solid first set versus Coco Vandeweghe, Frances lost only three games the rest of the way to advance to the quarterfinals.
Frances played a beautiful first set to begin the match, leading Tiafoe 6-3, 3-0. This set became the highlight of Frances’ week, though, as she got to see what a great server she is and made sure to be more aggressive, serving at the baseline instead of dropping her shots at the net.
What a comeback. A solid second set, after Frances lost 2-1 in the first set when Tiafoe went on a 7-0 run. The third set was a thriller, with Frances serving for the set at 5-4, Tiafoe serving for 5-3. But, at game point, Frances played a solid backhand that forced Tiafoe to make a poor lob, which was followed by two forehands from Tiafoe. Tiafoe was forced to stay on the court and take a timeout to get herself ready for another game. And, she was. It was over in five.
Frances is now a part of the USA National Team, competing at the U17 World Championship in Turkey. She has another great week of competition coming up at the Futures USTA National in New York City, where she will face a very tough opponent in the eighth seed, Madison Keys.
